I am a Coach, Author, Speaker specializing in Senior Health & Fitness, always searching to add new modalities to my program. I love music and dance and appreciate their healing benefits. I want to become a Certified ZUMBA FITNESS INSTRUCTOR, to further support seniors to have fun while exercising and achieving a healthier, pain-free body.
In May, 2006, I completed the ZUMBA INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION WEEKEND WITH BETO. I’d like to share my experience with you.
The Deauville Hotel, Miami Beach, hosted the event. I was so excited- I’d be training for 2 days with Beto, the very talented choreographer, who brought ZUMBA FITNESS to the U.S.
I’ve been a dancer all my life, and thought the Zumba Fitness Certification weekend would be a piece of cake. NO PROBLEM!! Born and raised in NY, everyone was a dancer and we never took lessons. We were called ‘street dancers’, and you know what I mean if you are one.
In the early days of Zumba Fitness, Instructor Trainings took place over a 2 day period, Saturday and Sunday and there was little instruction, mostly dancing for hours. I was pre-registered- signed in, picked up my packet, gift and name tag. I was so excited to be taking this training with Beto, that I didn’t notice how many size 3 bodies or the very young age of most of the participants. It wasn’t until the weekend had begun as I looked around, I saw that I was the ‘OLDEST-SOON-TO-BE-ZUMBA-INSTRUCTOR’ in the room. At that time, I was 67 years old.
There were both men and women in the training, most of whom were of Hispanic background, very beautiful and very young. I was the oldest person in the room. There were also dancers from all around the globe. Most of the participants have grown up with this music and dance and spoke Spanish. All I could say was, Hola!!
Most ZUMBA FITNESS classes are 1hr in length. After the first hour at the training, we continued to dance. We danced and danced and danced, had lunch, had breaks, and danced and danced and danced. All I could think about was, “I can’t feel my legs. How am I going to get up to my hotel room on these feet.”
Even when I was a younger dancer, much, much, younger, I danced for 3-4hrs and was fine. Nothing hurt and I could always feel my legs. My legs were sore and numb. “How am I going to return tomorrow? was my concern. I needed a massage desperately, but there was no massage therapist around.
I had a little more water to drink, sat for an hour and watched the other dancers standing, talking and laughing. No one else was sitting. I was reminded that I recommend Epsom Salts to my clients. 2 cups in their bath after their massage prevents inflammation and reduces pain. It was time for the Wellness Coach to follow her own advice. The challenge was to locate a pharmacy and the second challenge was to get my body there.
Walgreen’s, across from the hotel, saved the day and my aching body. The human spirit is undaunting, isn’t it, when we’re faced with a challenge? We can do anything, if we are committed to the result. Hooray for Epsom Salts. Ooooh! Ahhhh! was all I could say, as I submerged every cell into the healing waters.
Before my magic potion was infused into my bath water, I didn’t think I could continue the training. I didn’t think I could dance one more Zumba Fitness routine. Yet, I knew I was not a quitter and I would not leave without my Certification. I was determined to finish the weekend, even if I took frequent breaks.
After an hour in the tub, I would soon discover whether my legs would allow me to continue my Zumba Certification Weekend or whether I’d be calling room service for dinner. Wow! I feel great!! I’m starving. Cuban food here I come. I walked to a local Cuban Restaurant and had a wonderful dinner.
I completed my training weekend and was awarded my Zumba Fitness Certificate. I was so proud of myself, a granny who kept dancing with her ‘grandkids’ was now a Zumba Fitness Instructor. I earned this weekend, for sure!!

The good news for all of you interested in becoming a Zumba Instructor, is that ZIN (Zumba Instructor Network) consolidated the training to One-Day. In the One Day Workshop, we dance, we have workshops, we learn new steps and new dances and we learn to choreograph a song.
I have been teaching for more than 7 yrs now and continue taking classes to update my skills.

Hola! me gustaria saber que salida laboral tiene este tipo de clases en U.K.. Me gustaria hacer el curso para poder obtener el certificado y dar clases de Zumba aca pero no estoy segura si tiene salida laboral y el curso es un poco elevado para mi en estos momentos. Tengo 36 anos y soy instructora de aerobic, areo-latino entre otras disiplinas pero no he tenido el gusto de dar clases aqui todabia ya que mi certificacion es de Argentina y por lo que tengo entendido , no me sirve para trabajar aca. Tampoco cuento con tiempo como para hacer un instructorada de uno o mas anos ya que tengo 3 hijos y trabajo 35 hs semanales en otro rubro que no es el mio presisamennte. Agradezco cualquier informacion que pueda ayudarme a vivir de lo que amo y he tenido la suerte de poder hacer por muchos anos antes de llegar aca hace ano y medio. Gracias

Hi Debbie, thank you for your interest in Zumba Gold. There is no Zumba Gold DVD available and as a member of Zumba Instructor Network, we cannot make our own DVDs. However, There is a regular Zumba DVD available for $25 that I can send you if interested. You can adapt the steps to fit your needs. Let me know if you are interested and you can pay via PayPal.
Hi Debbie, thanks for your comment. Everyone can do some part of the zumba Gold dance routines, even if they are limited in some way. There is no DVD for Zumba Gold. However, there are DVDs for regular Zumba, which is much faster. I’ll keep you in mind when I learn of a Gold DVD.

You don’t have to be perfect. It’s OK to make mistakes. Your love for dance and your willingness to teach will be more powerful than whether you do a routine perfectly.
