Dancing has many many benefits and I think it is one of the healthiest forms of exercise that everyone can do no matter what their level of expertise. We’re moving every muscle and every joint and we’re even building bone density. People of all ages in every culture have been dancing from the time they are born. Ever watch a 2yr old when music is playing – they naturally move and shake and are totally uninhibited. We were uninhibited when we were babies and as we became socialized, we learned how to be self conscious and embarrassed.
The statement painted on the wall at Abby Bella Dance Studio in Scottsdale, AZ where I used to teach ZUMBA GOLD, says it all, DANCE AS IF NO ONE IS WATCHING. We have become so self-conscious and embarrassed about how we appear to others, that we have stifled a beautiful natural instinct, the instinct to dance. Imagine, being alone in a room or outdoors with no one looking as we move our bodies to different rhythms, instruments and sounds.
As a Wellness Coach, I see Dancing as therapy, having a healing effect on all three levels, body, mind and spirit. Mayo Clinic researchers reported that dancing helps to:
- Reduce stress
- Increase energy
- Improve strength
- Increase muscle tone and coordination
The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) says that dancing can:
- Lower your risk of coronary heart disease
- Decrease blood pressure
- Help you manage your weight
- Strengthen the bones of your legs and hips
ZUMBA GOLD is a unique form of dancing, a unique form of exercise because it provides the heart-healthy benefits of an aerobic exercise while also allowing you to interact with other people. This is especially beneficial for your mind. A 21 yr study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that dancing can reduce the risk of Alzheimers and other forms of dementia in the elderly.
ZUMBA GOLD is a wonderful way for people to dance who love to dance and who don’t have a dance partner. You don’t need a dance partner to ZUMBA. We dance in a studio in an aerobics style class. Everyone is dancing on their own and no one is watching you. You watch the instructor and follow the best you can at your own pace.

Dr. Joe Verghese, a neurologist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a lead researcher of the study, commented that one of the main reasons dancing is so effective in reducing the risk of dementia in the elderly is because dancing engages the dancer’s mind. Dancing ZUMBA requires concentration and focus and increases mind/body coordination. Endorphins are released in the brain which I call , HAPPY HORMONES and when you’re happy, you can’t be worried, angry or sad at the same time. I watch seniors dancing ZUMBA GOLD and I know the wonderful benefits they are gaining from their participation.
Dr. Verghese says dancing may be a triple benefit for the brain. Not only does the physical aspect of dancing increase blood flow to the brain, but also the social aspect of the activity leads to less stress, depression and loneliness. ZUMBA DANCING requires learning new dance steps and watching the instructor and others in the room which provide mental challenges that are crucial for brain health.
Dancing is a weight-bearing activity, which builds bones. It’s also a great workout for your upper body in building muscle strength. Most women past menopause face the risk of bone fracture from osteopenia or osteoporosis. Doctors recommend weight bearing and strengthening exercises to build bone and dancing ZUMBA GOLD is a wonderful way to build bone density while having fun.
